Central AC Repair & Installation Cost in Ohio

Ohio summers are short but humid, and most homes have central air tied into the furnace ductwork. This page covers what common AC repairs cost and what a new system runs installed.

New system prices in Ohio

Statewide typical ranges, installed. City pages adjust these for local labor costs.

Standard 14.3–15 SEER2

$4,800 – $7,600 installed

Single-stage condenser and matching coil for a 2–3.5 ton home. Meets current federal minimums for Ohio.

Mid-efficiency 16–17 SEER2

$6,200 – $9,400 installed

Two-stage compressor: longer, quieter runs that pull more humidity out of the air on muggy July days.

Variable-speed 18+ SEER2

$8,500 – $13,500 installed

Inverter compressor and communicating controls. Best comfort and lowest bills, highest price.

Signs it is time to replace

  • The system is 12–15+ years old and needs a compressor or coil
  • It needs refrigerant every summer (there is a leak somewhere)
  • The outdoor unit hums but the fan does not spin
  • Air from the vents is cool but the house stays sticky and humid
  • Ice forms on the copper line or the indoor coil

Repair or replace your AC

Capacitors, contactors and fan motors are cheap, common failures. Fixing them on a 15-year-old unit is still reasonable. A failed compressor or a leaking evaporator coil on a system that old is usually the point where a new system makes more sense, because those repairs cost a third to half of a new install.

Older systems that use R-22 refrigerant are another signal. R-22 is no longer produced, so recharging one is expensive. Systems installed after 2010 use R-410A; new 2025+ systems use lower-impact refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32.

Getting the size right

Bigger is not better. An oversized AC cools the house quickly, shuts off and leaves moisture in the air, which is exactly the clammy feeling Ohio homeowners complain about. A proper quote starts with a load calculation (Manual J) that looks at square footage, insulation, windows and which way the house faces.

Most Ohio homes between 1,200 and 2,400 square feet need 2 to 3.5 tons. If a contractor sizes the new unit only by reading the old label, ask how they confirmed it.

AC and furnace together

If the furnace is also past 15 years, replacing both at once often saves $800–$1,500 in labor compared with two separate jobs, and guarantees the indoor coil and blower are matched for the rated efficiency. If the furnace is newer, the installer only needs to replace the condenser, coil and line set.

FAQ

How much does central AC cost in Ohio?

A new central air conditioner for an existing ducted home typically costs $4,800–$7,600 installed for a standard unit, $6,200–$9,400 for a two-stage system and $8,500–$13,500 for a variable-speed system.

When is the best time to replace an AC in Ohio?

Early spring and fall. Installers are less busy than during the first July heat wave, and you have time to compare quotes instead of buying the first available unit.

How long does an air conditioner last in Ohio?

Usually 12–17 years. The shorter Ohio cooling season helps, but road salt, cottonwood fluff and dirty filters shorten it. Rinse the outdoor coil each spring and keep plants 2 feet away from the unit.

Is a heat pump better than a new AC in Ohio?

A heat pump costs about $1,000–$2,500 more than an AC but also heats your home in spring and fall, using the gas furnace only on the coldest days. It makes most sense where electricity is reasonably priced or you want to cut gas use.
